RSPB Strumpshaw Fen is one of the finest nature reserves in East Anglia, and Church Farm Barns is one of the closest accommodation providers — just 4 miles away, roughly 10 minutes by car.
About RSPB Strumpshaw Fen
Strumpshaw Fen sits on the River Yare and protects a mosaic of reedbeds, wet woodland, and flower-rich meadows. It is one of the most reliable sites in the UK for bitterns, marsh harriers, and kingfishers. In summer, swallowtail butterflies — Britain's rarest — can be seen here. Winter brings hen harrier roosts, starling murmurations, and large numbers of wildfowl.
Things to Do
Walk the Fen Trail through reedbeds to hides overlooking open water. Follow the Meadow Trail for orchids in early summer. Watch for bitterns booming in the reedbeds (January to June). In winter, stay for the hen harrier roost from the Tower Hide at dusk. The reserve has a visitor centre, toilets, and a children's adventure trail. Note: dogs are not allowed except assistance dogs.
Getting Here from Church Farm Barns
