The countryside around Lingwood is flat, open, and criss-crossed with quiet lanes, footpaths, and long-distance trails. Whether you prefer a gentle stroll or a full day's walk, there are routes to suit all levels right from the door of Church Farm Barns.
The Wherryman's Way
This 35-mile long-distance trail runs from Norwich to Great Yarmouth along the River Yare. It passes through Brundall, just a few miles from Lingwood, and follows the river through marshes, meadows, and small villages. You do not need to walk the full distance — sections between Brundall and Reedham or between Reedham and Berney Arms make excellent half-day walks.
The path is mostly flat and follows the riverbank, with views across the Broads marshes. It can be muddy in winter but is generally well-maintained.
Strumpshaw and the Yare Valley
A circular walk from Strumpshaw village takes in the edge of the RSPB reserve and the river valley. The route passes through farmland and woodland and gives views across the reedbeds. Allow about 2 hours for the full loop.
The lanes between Lingwood, Strumpshaw, and Brundall are quiet enough for comfortable cycling, with very little traffic outside peak commuting hours.
Salhouse and Hoveton Great Broad
About 20 minutes north by car, Salhouse Broad has a lovely short walk through ancient oak woodland to the water's edge. It is flat, shaded, and accessible. Dogs are welcome (on leads during peak season).
Nearby, Hoveton Great Broad has a nature trail managed by Natural England that runs through wet woodland and fen. Access is by boat or on foot from the village.
Cycling the Broads
The Broads by Bike network has signed routes across the area. From Lingwood, you can cycle to Brundall, then along quiet lanes to Acle or south to Reedham. The terrain is flat throughout — this is some of the easiest cycling in England.
Bike hire is available in Norwich and at some Broads locations. The quieter lanes around Lingwood, Burlingham, and South Walsham make for relaxed riding with very little traffic.
Practical Notes
Paths in the Broads area can be wet and muddy, particularly between November and March. Waterproof boots are recommended for most walks. Some riverside paths flood after heavy rain — check conditions if you are planning a specific route.
Mobile signal can be patchy in parts of the marshes, so it is worth downloading maps or route descriptions before you set out. OS Explorer maps 40 (The Broads) and OL40 cover the local area in detail.
Church Farm Barns has free parking and bike storage. We are happy to suggest routes based on what you are looking for — just ask at check-in or via our contact page.
